The shot did help me quite a bit and physio has helped me regain quite a bit of range of motion, but I expect the surgery in 1 -2 months. You are right, Xray won't show the full extent of the injury. I was in much the same boat as you for the first few months after my surgery until I convinced my Dr to send me to a specialist. Best of luck.

Also, I recommend running forefoot. Look up barefoot running and POSE method. I think running heel to toe and doing heel strikes causes problems.
