Isn't it in how we ... By: nicodagger. on 05 Mar 10, 06:54:25 Isn't it in how we are raised, what is the musical milieu we grow up in, that determines our perception of "music"? If all of our lullabyes had been atonal, if we heard nothing but, say, 12-tone tunes from the age of 2, wouldn't the concept of "tonality" be moot? Wouldn't our musical norm be so-called "atonality"? And therefore music like this would be our "pop music". I wonder.

You mean: What's ... By: Fnoalle. on 22 Feb 10, 23:09:00 You mean: What's the difference between "written music", "serious music", or even the clumsy "classical music" and "pop music". The answer is simple: In written music, the Work is the text. In pop music, the Work is the recording. It can be added that in pop music (and I also include experimental electronica) the music is almost always tonal (or at least modal). This is what contemporary classical music has tried to get away from since a long time, in various ways.

By: stapler942. on 21 Feb 10, 23:23:20 As bassninjatroy said, atonality is the absence of a gravity towards one note and the relationships that are implied in that, and how important (structurally) all the other tones in an octave are to that particular key...As I heard one music theory prof put it a while ago, imagine your tonic as a kind of sun, and your dominant as, say...Jupiter, etc.
Maybe linguistically speaking, atonality can refer to total silence, but the English definition is by all accounts referring to the above.

And "pop music" is not just Kelly Clarkson, but also some of the greater artists. Jimi Hendrix is "pop music" and he makes quite some groovy artistic music. You know, Hendrix seems like the humble guy that just made music for the love to music rather than promoting a political movement or getting famous, even though that followed, too. Xenakis was also all for getting further into music. so how do they differ?

"Atonal" doesn't mean "without tones." It means "without tonality." If you don't understand what tonality is or what its evolution in Western music involves, you probably shouldn't be having this conversation.
I think you got the ... By: starwarsfan012345. on 01 Feb 10, 22:45:02 I think you got the two terms mixed around, BenMcCormack91. The word atonal is a misnomer, because if something is atonal, it wouldn't have any tones. In this case, the type of music that is currently dubbed as "atonal" actually has more tones incorporated in it than normal tonal music, thus providing more possibilities for the artistic expression of emotions. So all in all, "atonal" music can convey many more emotions than tonal music can.

You ENTIRELY missed the point of what I wrote. You keep bringing up emotions, and I keep saying that atonal music may or may not be trying to portray emotions. You keep straw-manning atonal composers saying that they compose in a "romantic" emotional way. If this was a Messiaen or Schoenberg piece that would be one thing, but post-war composers would say you're full of it.
You don't sound ... By: BenMcCormack91. on 22 Jan 10, 15:02:53 You don't sound like you read my second comment. At all. Calling me emotionally-immature isn't really going to help anything, especially when you don't even express an awareness of what I actually said. I acknowledge the emotional variety in atonal music. I just think that "atonal" is a silly term to begin with. It allows you to categorize, when categorization isn't warranted. Hell; I've heard atonal music that actually sounds melodic.
Read what I say before responding, please.
You're wrong
First ... By: saladshootavvv. on 22 Jan 10, 00:55:21 You're wrong
First of all, it may or may not be trying to portray an emotion at all. You can't just sweep all of the ranges of atonality into one category. There is a difference between Algorithmic composition, Feldman, Cage, Schoenberg, Ligeti, etc.
Secondly, that claim doesn't hold any water. Not only is that purely subjective, you sound like my mom saying that punk rock doesn't have any musical qualities since they don't sing. TBH I think you're still immature emotionally.

3D animation. Best viewed with anaglyph (red/green glasses). This animation shows the spread of cancer via blood vessels. In this case, the final destination is guided by signaling molecules that bind to the migrating cells. In the example shown, the signaling molecules are SDF-1 and the receptor is CXCR4. This is thought to occur in breast cancer and some other cancer types.

If it is a place like the frontal lobe you might cause cognitive deficites or a personality change.

Like with both types of amnesias, it damages facets of the hippocampus but we are still able to do things we've learned and recall certain memories. Also in some cases where a patient was Epileptic there is a surgery to split the brain in half. This makes it so that the messages traveling from one side of the hippocampus cant reach the other. like using right and left sides of the body

Memories are not stored in one single place. Karl Lashly spent years looking for the memory engram by systematically dissecting parts of the animal brain, but could not effect memory loss through localized amputation.
Memories are stored and recalled using many brain areas which can rewire themselves if need be.

The brain is a ... By: snowboardpnk540. on 02 Mar 10, 00:21:12 The brain is a little more firm than the consistency of an egg yolk. The hippocampus is also very complicated, and it is not where memories are stored exactly. Case in point, patient HM had his hippocampus destroyed and didn't forget his life (retrograde amnesia). He just had no short term memory and was unable to learn most new things (anterograde amnesia). He could however learn novel procedural tasks but did not remeber learning them. Point is, the hippocampus is very complex.

If this part of the brain is stimulated a few things could happen. They could have regression period where they remember past events, or they could lose or damage existing memories. The hippocampus also deals with motor functions and other things. So too much stimulus could damage this part of the brain... The brain is very delicate, which is why most studies with electrodes are done on animals.

Isn't it in how we are raised, what is the musical milieu we grow up in, that determines our perception of "music"? If all of our lullabyes had been atonal, if we heard nothing but, say, 12-tone tunes from the age of 2, wouldn't the concept of "tonality" be moot? Wouldn't our musical norm be so-called "atonality"? And therefore music like this would be our "pop music". I wonder.
By: sdsoufleris2. on 04 Mar 10, 06:58:36
this music is not contrary to the main stream or the great geniuses of classical music. it is the natural evolution. actually it was contained in the lat works of Beethoven for example. Bach always lies behind modern music. could our times be expressed by a moderate sweet kind of music. modern classical music is necessary.
By: TubeFil. on 03 Mar 10, 19:32:52
@bassninjatroy in my oppinion, comparing this to Kelly Clarkson is like comparing apples to oranges and saying that apples are better.. altough both are fruit, they're completely different kind
By: nepalnt21. on 01 Mar 10, 03:38:03
nothing wrong with bach and chopin, in fact, some of the most beautiful and creative music was written by these two geniuses... but if all music followed those lines, then we would never have progression. what would a world be like without experimentation, pushing the boundaries? not a world i would like to live in. perhaps this music will grow on you... you may benefit from learning the history of music up until this point. .

By: Fnoalle. on 22 Feb 10, 23:09:00
You mean: What's the difference between "written music", "serious music", or even the clumsy "classical music" and "pop music". The answer is simple: In written music, the Work is the text. In pop music, the Work is the recording. It can be added that in pop music (and I also include experimental electronica) the music is almost always tonal (or at least modal). This is what contemporary classical music has tried to get away from since a long time, in various ways.
By: stapler942. on 21 Feb 10, 23:23:20
As bassninjatroy said, atonality is the absence of a gravity towards one note and the relationships that are implied in that, and how important (structurally) all the other tones in an octave are to that particular key...As I heard one music theory prof put it a while ago, imagine your tonic as a kind of sun, and your dominant as, say...Jupiter, etc. Maybe linguistically speaking, atonality can refer to total silence, but the English definition is by all accounts referring to the above.
By: redbull101991. on 21 Feb 10, 21:06:50
Awfull.... if its the "new classical music" i prefer Bach and Chopin definitely. :)

By: bassninjatroy. on 14 Feb 10, 22:00:51
Well, I would say the main difference is stylistic, but I'm not really the person to ask. I thought you were being stupid, I'm sorry.
By: checkoutniandra. on 14 Feb 10, 18:54:33
well, i read some of that adorno book about "new music" and "pop-music".
By: bassninjatroy. on 14 Feb 10, 01:37:44
listen to something like this, and then listen to Kelly Clarkson. That is the difference.
By: bassninjatroy. on 14 Feb 10, 01:36:24
no dude, you're wrong. Tonality is the pull towards one tone or chore, the tonic. Atonal music does away with the conventions and characteristics that create that pull. Any sounds at all is a "tone", so by your definition atonal music would be complete silence.
By: Gredin666. on 12 Feb 10, 23:52:57
Who cares about names? This is revolution! My favorite piece. Thanks for putting this.
By: checkoutniandra. on 12 Feb 10, 15:47:33
what is the main-difference between new music and popmusic? i dont really get it. somebody knows?
By: BenMcCormack91. on 02 Feb 10, 03:31:52
@starwarsfan012345 I'm sorry, but... you're joking, right? "Atonal" doesn't mean "without tones." It means "without tonality." If you don't understand what tonality is or what its evolution in Western music involves, you probably shouldn't be having this conversation.
By: starwarsfan012345. on 01 Feb 10, 22:45:02
I think you got the two terms mixed around, BenMcCormack91.

By: BenMcCormack91. on 23 Jan 10, 03:46:43
@saladshootavvv Gladly conceded - it seems to have come clear that you and I are both completely clueless as to what the other has been saying, and you clarified it.
By: saladshootavvv. on 22 Jan 10, 15:36:26
Nope. You're mistaken. Who would've thought I could have read what you wrote and still disagree? You ENTIRELY missed the point of what I wrote. You keep bringing up emotions, and I keep saying that atonal music may or may not be trying to portray emotions. You keep straw-manning atonal composers saying that they compose in a "romantic" emotional way. If this was a Messiaen or Schoenberg piece that would be one thing, but post-war composers would say you're full of it.
By: BenMcCormack91. on 22 Jan 10, 15:02:53
You don't sound like you read my second comment.
By: saladshootavvv. on 22 Jan 10, 00:55:21
You're wrong First of all, it may or may not be trying to portray an emotion at all.
