there is also ... By: cohenramin. on 06 Jul 10, 13:02:10 there is also another way using distributive property like this
since it is easier to multiply numbers that end with zero this helps out
58x23 you turn 58 into 60 then multiply 60 and 23 which is 1380 and then since 58+2=60 you multiply 2 to 23 making 46 which you than subtract from 1380 making 1334 yours is easier but this way applies to numbers close to 20 30 40 600 7000 etc but thank you for this

You want Base10 to work above Base20. It does. Like 22 x 21 = ?
Distance of these no. from Base10 is 12 and 11 . So add 11 to 22 (or 12 to 21) We get 33_ or 330 . Now add to it 11 x 12 = 132 . So 330 + 132 = 462 (Ans)

@asianloverexpress ... By: sleeper2345. on 28 Jul 10, 13:02:22 @asianloverexpress I'd love to see your list of things that students just need to memorize without understanding (aka "take for granted". However, we do expect them to explain why multiplication and addition are commutative. Research has shown that students can and do provide reasoned arguments for commutativity and if they don't they often assume that division and subtraction are commutative. I've worked with many 5th grade students who think that 4-10 is the same as 10 - 4.
@sleeper2345 Well ... By: asianloverexpress. on 28 Jul 10, 07:38:59 @sleeper2345 Well truthfully as soon as someone opinion gains some momentum then you know somebody is going to get upset. And there are certain things that kids need to take for granted, we don't make them check to make sure the field they are working in is commutative, or that they know the fundamental theorem of algebra while learning to factor polynomials, but either way I am glad you have an opinion and I hope you put your ideas into motion.
@asianloverexpress ... By: sleeper2345. on 27 Jul 10, 11:23:42 @asianloverexpress The only difference between your opinion and mine is that mine has some basis in research and student learning. We know that students have difficulty learning mindless rules and that learning rules with little understanding hurts retention. However, as long as the discussion is "just a matter of opinion" nothing will change. I'm surprised we're still not treating patients with voodoo in the US as we tend to believe everything is a matter of opinion.
@sleeper2345 You ... By: asianloverexpress. on 27 Jul 10, 06:14:30 @sleeper2345 You know Sleeper I am glad that you at least have an opinion on this unlike some people that probably just watch youtube videos because they have no other life. I respectfully disagree and feel that if students can learn anyway possible and just be proficient in their arithmetic I am happy. Once again your views are not wrong just I learned the traditional way and felt it to be not a bad method. But who knows what kids need today if its this and it works then I am perfectly happy
@asianloverexpress ... By: sleeper2345. on 25 Jul 10, 21:34:05 @asianloverexpress If the student cannot understand the partial products algorithm, there is no way he/she can make sense of the traditional US multiplication algorithm. Thus, little will be retained. If the student learns an algorithm without the underlying understanding, I fail to see the difference between this and using a calculator (except the calculator will more often generate correct results).
@sleeper2345 I ... By: asianloverexpress. on 25 Jul 10, 15:44:17 @sleeper2345 I understand that you advocate this partial products method and even though it may have underlying meaning in polynomials and may introduce many new ideas such as distribution it still needs to be seen that will kids grasp all of this within the short time the teacher goes over it, no.

By: gth753f. on 24 Jul 10, 00:43:31 I understand why she would be against students learning these methods as primary means of solving problems for tests in class, but what these books are trying to teach is not math so much as it is reason or logic. Too many kids learn algorithms like the ones she advocates, but can only use these algorithms in class on a test or homework problem worded a certain way. The importance of learning logical reasoning goes beyond the classroom into everyday situations. For example, tipping at a

This "TERC" method or however it's called, is actually the exact method I use to do calculations like the example in my head. Something I developed on my own as a kid. I'm currently a math major in college and still to this day I use that method all the time. If you are going to be doing math in your head, and want to do it quickly, this "TERC" method is the way to go!
What Ms. McDermott ... By: poch333. on 15 Jul 10, 19:04:17 What Ms. McDermott is advocating is ARITHMETIC. This is not the same as MATHEMATICS.
I was taught the standard algorithms, but I think it is much better to be taught the new ways like TERC. There is nothing wrong with using a calculator, as long as you understand the basic concepts.

It also shows much more "conceptual learning" then the standard algorithm. Terence Tao was a seven year-old high school student when he began taking calculus classes. By age 20 he had received a Ph.D. from Princeton and joined the UCLA faculty. In 2006 he won the Fields Medal in Mathematics and a MacArthur "genius" grant. Watch Tao talk about how he approaches problem-solving.

yes, and when difficult problems (sometimes not so difficult problems) come up, we just defer them to the computer. The math part of course is just used to select the right model to simulate and choose the most reasonable parameter. (which could mean the different between a simulation that took hours and give the wrong answer and one that took only minutes and give the correct one)

Maths degrees have stuff like: Topology, Abstract Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory, Analytical Number Theory, Chaos and Fractal Geometry, etc... topics engineers don't touch. but eng isn't easy either. we do stuff like microelectronics/analogue circuit design that are of legendary difficulty, but we just dont do as much maths.
@e521soediv It ... By: rlinfinity. on 17 Jul 10, 10:52:58 @e521soediv It should be obvious. If an engineer does a 480 credit MEng degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (arguably the most mathematical of the Eng degrees) less than 50% (240 credits) of those modules will focus on maths. The ones that do will NOT emphasize rigour. A mathematician's 480 credit MMath will focus entirely on math modules and will place strong emphasis on rigour. Go read up on it. I've got better things to do than sit around schooling you.

@e521soediv Maths ... By: rlinfinity. on 13 Jul 10, 23:22:00 @e521soediv Maths takes a have a completely different focus to the subject than physical scientists, strongly emphasising "rigour" -- a concept you won't appreciate with ur surface understanding of math and your obvious disdain for pure maths. You have a lot to learn. As an engineer and computer scientist (CS) I can attest to the fact that physical scientists study only a few narrow areas of math. Even CS as a formal science emphasizes more rigour in maths treatment than physical science.
@e521soediv in the ... By: rlinfinity. on 13 Jul 10, 23:18:40 @e521soediv in the UK where we specialise very early, there is no way a guy with a Masters degree in physics or engineering knows equal or more mathematics than a guy who did a four year first degree in maths. Sure, a physics/engineer graduate could do an MSc in maths and about equal it, but not if he did phys or ee. there are just so many different branches of math that no physical scientist studies. FYI -- Calculus is only the tip of the iceberg, and it's not "advanced math".
@rlinfinity If you ... By: e521soediv. on 13 Jul 10, 20:59:47 @rlinfinity If you don't think an master level EE math is at the level of a 4 year undergraduate mathematicians math skill, then we can look at the curriculum and I can mostly prove it to you. Do engineers not take calc? calc II, calc III?, diff equations? quatum mechanics? classical mechanics? laplace eaquations? yea i can say that there math skill is somewhere near a mathematicians. Prove me wrong. Especially phycisist, i think they are at the mathematician level, just ask Einstein.
@rlinfinity If you ... By: e521soediv. on 13 Jul 10, 20:53:53 @rlinfinity If you have all those degrees that you Cliam to have(keyword Claim), i don't think you would be on youtube cussing at a 17 year old, but instead you might be trying to "educate" me on the matter and be glad to share you knowledge instead of cussing me out and trying to downgrade me. Electrical engineering anyways is a more theoretical field and math is theory most of the time, so i would think that a masters course in EE will have mathemactics at the level of a Mathematician.
@rlinfinity First ... By: e521soediv. on 13 Jul 10, 20:50:42 @rlinfinity First of all, you're startting to sound like a total narccissistic snob with your comment about my opinion not matter and the truck driver thing and what not, so you lose points there. You're starting to sound like an old washed up guy, i beter you're 40+ correct? yea got cha. But anyways I didnt say that an engineers level of math is at the level of a mathematicians i said that it is nearly comparable, but you thought otherwise by puting words in my mouth so you can make urself mad.
@e521soediv For ... By: rlinfinity. on 13 Jul 10, 13:29:38 @e521soediv For another matter, I am an applied mathematician and I love my field. But admittedly it pales in comparison to pure mathematics. I have the greatest respect for pure mathematician's and I love absract work over application. the only reason I didn't pick pure maths was because I feared my work would be undistinguished--- Pure maths research is very difficult. I know many applied mathematicians who feel the same. And no Engineer I studied with has nearly my level of maths.
@e521soediv you're ... By: rlinfinity. on 13 Jul 10, 13:24:53 @e521soediv you're horribly wrong. You're pulling shit out of ur arse. I did a four year degree (BSc(Hons)) in Comp Sci and a 5 year advanced professional degree(MEng) in Electrical Eng, Both highly mathematical fields and yet it was highly insufficient to be a true matheamtician. I was able to do research in applied maths ONLY cos I studied an enormous amount of math on my own (well beyond engineer), and it was necessary for my work. I am speaking out of experience. Unlike you who conjecture.
@e521soediv If ... By: rlinfinity. on 13 Jul 10, 13:20:30 @e521soediv If you're a highschool student just starting "college" then clearly you don't have the depth or breadth of understanding to comment on the matter. You're just a young upstart. Go to college, listen to the people who have some knowledge to share, and learn. You're sounding rather idiotic. Your opinion doesn't matter. It's insignificant. I'd sooner go ask for a truck driver's opinion on nanophotonics or a bible thumper's opinion on Maynard Smith's views on evolution. Now go study.
@rlinfinity First ... By: e521soediv. on 13 Jul 10, 00:20:03 @rlinfinity First of all, i'm not an "old chap" i'm a 17 y/o college bound high school student, and secoond of all like I said before, studying NUMBERS (NOT METHODS) just for the heck of it isn't going to take you anywhere in the real world. Differential geometry was a method of minupulating numbers, i'm talking about studying numbers themselves just for the heck of it. And the mathematical knowledge and engineer has is almost comparable to a mathematician, atleast at the practical level.

In the case of relativistic physics - nuclear power. In the case of quantum physics: electronics, quantum electronics and quantum computing.
The mathematics that these fields were based on (for example differential Geometry) did not have obvious applications when they were developed. Number Theory is finding uses in cryptography. You need to broaden your horizons, old chap.
@rlinfinity How can ... By: e521soediv. on 09 Jul 10, 20:20:42 @rlinfinity How can number theory, or studying numbers just for the heck of it be useful for humanity? you should study numbers for a practical application, not just for the intellectual stimulation of it. I be watching many math programs, and one on KLCS, a show that is called "Mathematics illuminated" (this guy was a guest on that show once Terry Tao) and yea basica;; the majority of that show is based on abstract useless theories that 99.9% of humanity don't even care about or dont even know.
@mephatboi lol ... By: catalinaguerrero. on 08 Jul 10, 05:30:08 @mephatboi lol don't put mathematicians so high engineers have not a specialized deep knowledge of math true but it's also true that all mathematicians are not bright people a know a few that are at universities "researching" but all they do is to party and live from the taxes that support universities. Happens in all fields of research, kind of sad, but true.

Prodigious ability doesn't necessarily make someone smarter than non-prodigy experts in the field. It simply means you have more time to study the field as you've developed quicker mentally. Some legendary mathematicians were not prodigies.
@e521soediv You're ... By: rlinfinity. on 08 Jul 10, 03:48:38 @e521soediv You're also quite wrong. Read GH Hardy's "A Mathematician's Apology" if you want to understand this better. He explains why even applied mathematics is boring, ugly and trite. There is beauty and elegance in pure mathematics, particularly number theory, and mathematics that finds application does not have the same degree of elegance. But my current research is in applying abstract mathematical spaces and fractal geometry to evolution -- i am sure Hardy would find that elegant. :)

By: ultradumbass. on 26 Jul 10, 17:58:50 you did it the hard way. my trick for doing it in my head fast is to do 12 times 32 equals 384. then add 2 zeroes. 38400. then 3 times 320 equals 960. and 1 times 120 equals 120. 960 plus 120 equals 1080. 1 times 3 equals 3. 3 plus 1080 equals 1083. 38400 plus 1083 equals 39483.

High level math students are not doing well, for MANY reasons. Books have been written on this. Try to re-write what to wrote in a more organized way. It almost reads as an incoherent rant.
I hate to break it ... By: casunshine84. on 23 May 10, 00:06:21 I hate to break it to you but this is rediculous. numbers are a form of initialing or mapping. numbers are designed to get rid of oral memorization of amounts and make a map of inventory. 1=O, 2=OO, 3=OOO and 4=OOOO. what your counting can change, the picture symbol, the physical number does not. this is why math is bottoming out, high level math students dont understand basic number concepts. numbers are a form of initialing for pictographs, designed to do away with drawing objects to count.

I just have to say, ... By: SandeeDude. on 14 Jul 10, 21:27:18 I just have to say, in relation to the one at 0:12, the equation is wrong. a+a=a+x is incorrect. a=x may be totally fine, but you can't add something to one side and add it to the other. You only do this when multiplying and dividing. For example, if you multiply one side by 2, you must do the same to the other side. This does not work for adding and subtracting. Therefore 2 does not equal 1.
I will be so disappointed if no one else gets this.

Math skills slowly built up from the moment you started to learn how to count, until the day you close your last math book. If you don't get algebra then you probably don't know how to multiply, divide, and work with fractions well enough. Don't be embarased. Go back to your 5th grade math book and practice until you have it in your bones. You will then find pre-algebra and algebra easy.

However, these assumptions must be reasonable. May I ask by what reasoning you make an assumption that I am a college drop out?
The question is rhetorical, you don't know and you can't know....and you happen to be wrong too. It might have been correct by mere chance but it would have been no more reasonable if it were, which it isn't.

I find preambles ... By: PeelTower. on 10 Dec 08, 22:52:13 I find preambles like this one incredibly irritating. Instead of telling everyone assembled why he his nervous yet honoured and oh so humble, why doesn't he just get on with the subject.
And if I hear one more introduction like: " Of course Prof so and so needs no introduction" then followed by a long introduction, I will scream. Mathematics should be concise and so should those who talk about it. You aren't charming or witty. I don't want a bad stand up. I want "why mathematics is important" OK

When you have more than 9, you will have a carryover like when you add columns. So for the 14 you have 4 in that column and add the 1 to the number in the column to the left.
You can also look at the result like this. The total is the sum of (1X3) plus (10x8) plus (100x14)plus (1000x8) plus (10000 x 3)=3+80+1400+8000+30000=39483

So actually he is not completely right.
@weedipikia That's ... By: neoaeonian. on 18 May 10, 06:20:43 @weedipikia That's the clearest explanation of this I've ever heard. If you picked a goat and switch, you win. But if you pick a car and switch you lose. So, picking and switching gives you a 2/3 chance of winning, since you likely picked a goat. Best explanation I've heard ever, and I've seen this explained about 5 different ways. Very good!

Behind the other 2 ... By: weedipikia. on 05 Apr 10, 03:27:18 Behind the other 2 are goatse. You don't want that.
In both this and 21 they neglect the most important piece of information: the fact that host has to reveal a goat. That's important because if you pick the car on the first time then the host has 2 doors to choose from and you lose from switching, BUT if you pick one of the goats then the host shows you the other goat and switching gives you the car. So picking a goat the first time always wins, which means you have a 2/3 chance of winning.
